On Becoming Belly Belly Big
Tue, 08 Feb

I think we're about five months into the pregnancy now and I've lost count of how many weeks it is - can you see I've been quite a slacker with these things. I do know I have a blood test to check for blood sugar levels coming up soon... that makes a total of three blood samples taken so far for this pregnancy, yikes! How I do dread getting my blood drawn. The nice midwives never seem to be able to locate the vein and so they have to call on someone more senior who is usually very tough and rough and makes the whole thing extra painful.

I do feel like I've gotten very big very fast - my navel has popped out (an outie, as they call it here), my toes are getting more and more difficult to see, and I'm even quite hard-pressed to get into a pair of pants size 12. My clothes are quickly becoming obsolete and it looks like I'll have to turn to maternity duds sooner than I expected. Actually I feel like I could have this baby MUCH sooner than expected! He is kicking me quite strongly - looks like we have another active one on our hands.

Other than that, the pregnancy is progressing very smoothly, except for some back ache and joint pains. I've also been experiencing chocolate, ribena, rice paper roll, Vietnamese grilled chicken rice, prawn noodle soup, and pineapple tart cravings (the last of which I haven't been able to satisfy!). Maybe it's all that chocolate that's making me grow so fast. But even through all these pregnancy experiences we're still so aware that there is this brand new person we will meet not too far from now. A person bearing the very image of God, yet so unique to the rest of us in his own way. How awesome is that! The miraculous work of the Creator.

Joel is a lucky boy - the pregnancy has also gotten me thinking creatively a lot. And here's the work to show for it:

Can I take a bite?
"Your cheeks. Full, round, chubby and oh-so-nice to touch, so cute. So yummy I want to take a bite out of them and the only thing that stops me is knowing that a mother shouldn't do such things to her baby. It's no wonder then that you're always smothered with kisses. I just can't help myself."

J :: curious
"Joel, sometimes we (the “grown-ups”) wonder what it’s like to be a 7-month old baby - what it is they’re thinking about themselves and about their environment. Lucky for us, we don’t have to look very far to find out: you are a very curious and persistent little person. Not at all interested in your own toys, you find much more satisfaction looking into mommy’s craft box, the laundry basket, kitchen cabinets, even toilet bowls, although we try our best to distract you with more “age-appropriate” props. But that’s really ok. We've figured that that’s the stuff of life for a 7-month old."
